Baseball Hitting Techniques - Head and eye

Mastering head and eye position - baseball hitting techniques

Few tasks in any sport are as complex as correctly hitting a baseball. It takes a lot of practice time to truly get a hang of, let alone master. There is a near unlimited array of different individual steps, factors and tips to pay attention to. However, some are more important than others and one of the most basic of them all often gets overlooked. This is getting your head and eyes in the right position throughout your swing.

Failing to do this is going to lead to disastrous results for you in the batter's box. It can lead to everything from simply badly missing pitches that you should be connecting on, to altering the way that you swing and much more. The first time you ever picked up a bat somebody probably told you to keep your eyes on the ball. Well, that's still true and that's still of the utmost importance, and mastering that along with a few other basic guidelines will really enable you to pick up your game.

One of the first things to realize when refining your baseball hitting techniques is that your head cannot be moving as you swing. If your head is moving either back and forth, up and down or side to side in any way, you are always changing the angle that you're viewing the ball at and the distance of the ball to your eyes. This means that you are adding a whole new level of difficulty to your task of tracking that ball and matching your swing to it.

With your head stable and locked in so to speak, you'll be eliminating those extra variables. Instead of trying to track a moving target from a moving base, a task that's basically impossible, you can instead focus on simply locating and tracking the target itself. This will make life much easier for you when you're at the plate, particularly as pitcher's start gaining more speed and more movement on their pitches. That's what you need to focus on when you're working on your baseball hitting techniques.

The ideal positioning for your head is to be looking straight ahead at the pitcher as you are waiting to begin your swing. You almost should be tucking your chin into your shoulder, which will help keep your positioning consistent and steady, while ensuring that you are aligned properly and you have a full field of vision to work with.

With both eyes open and looking ahead, as the pitcher goes through his motion and throws the ball, your eyes should be doing the locating and adjusting as your head remains looking straight ahead. In addition to adding difficulty to locating the ball if you're head is moving, you're also going to be throwing your swing out of whack.

Your body follows your head and you're going to be ruining your mechanics by moving your head in any direction. So keep your head straight ahead and allow your eyes to do the tracking. Of course, you might be surprised at how many hitters end up closing their eyes at the last second from the force or concentration on the task of making contact.

Obviously this isn't a smart way to go about your baseball hitting techniques either. Ideally you should be using both of your eyes the entire time, offering a full range of vision and allowing you to really pinpoint that location. Good hitters can get by with just using one eye, but great hitters follow the whole way through with both eyes, offering greater depth perception and tracking.

At the end of the day, the most important things to realize with head and eye positioning for baseball hitting techniques is that you want to be putting yourself at an advantage as opposed to making your task all the more difficult. Moving your head, only using one eye, closing your eyes at the last second and so on only serve to make hitting the ball harder.

Baseball hitting techniques - locate the ball quickly

Providing a stable base for yourself and a full field of vision will allow you to locate the ball quickly, track it all the way to your bat and make adjustments to your swing and approach as you go. The only way to improve on this is to practice your baseball hitting techniques in the cage and on the field. Hitting is complicated enough already, so make your life easier and get your head and your eyes aligned in the right way. It's one of the most basic fundamentals for hitting that you started learning on day 1, but the importance of continuing to get that right remains all the way up through the ranks.

To the top of baseball hitting techniques.
