Improve Baseball Hitting

There are many different ways to improve baseball hitting. One of the most important factors in your success at the plate however is your overall reaction time. To improve that time and respond quicker, smarter and more efficiently, there are several different pieces of the puzzle that you can work on. Check out the following ways that you can help yourself get a head start on each and every pitch.

The first major element of improving your reaction time and capabilities will be your detection of the baseball. Early detection of the baseball will give you a better sense of what the pitch is, where it's going and how you should react. It will also enable you to lock into that pitch, following it all the way into your wheelhouse so that you make flush contact.

One of the very common problems with hitting, particularly when you end up striking out a lot, is that you don't see the ball soon enough. Your mind then is forced to make a last minute decision, and your body has to try to jump in to save the day at the last minute. Essentially you have your body and mind guessing, and then you hope that your guess allows you to swing properly once you see pitch.

That's why early detection is key to improve baseball hitting. Once you see the pitch, you can forget about guessing and instead focus on getting your body right and to swing in the right fashion. In order to train for this, you have to get your body used to detecting and tracking moving objects. However, many players and people of all kinds go about this the wrong way as well.

When you're in your stance, you are looking at the ball from the side and over your shoulder. However, when people use computer programs, online training tools and more they stare straight ahead. Your vision is very particular and is different from all angles, distances and in all kinds of different circumstances. Therefore, in order to improve baseball hitting, it's of the utmost importance that you train your eyes the way you plan on using them. That means working on your vision, tracking and detecting from the side, facing in the direction you would face while you're in the box.

Another important factor towards improving the quickness and effectiveness of your reaction is getting your body ready to respond as soon as your mind says "go". The lag time between your mind saying "swing" or "there it is" and your body actually going through the motions can end up costing you a lot of hits.

A big part of the technique to improve baseball hitting is simply getting to know your body and developing an awareness of yourself. Being tuned into your muscles and your stance, you'll be able to develop a sense for the most efficient and the quickest way to get started. You can also train for reaction time, reflexes and body speed in the gym in many different ways.

One aspect to remember in this is basic hand-eye coordination. Even if you can track the ball perfectly, if you can't get your body to get to that place then it's all useless. Conversely, great bat speed and body reaction time can't always make up for picking up the ball at the last possible second.

Don't forget that your swing is a complex, coordinated motion that requires the movement of almost all of your major muscle groups and body parts. Therefore, you have to train your body to work as a unit. This can be done by using compound exercises in the gym and focusing on training your body in ways in which it will actually be used, as opposed to standard exercises which may or may not really apply.

Improve baseball hitting - small pebbles or bottlecaps with sticks

We all hear the stories all the time about Major Leaguers who trained themselves as kids by hitting small pebbles or bottlecaps with sticks. Soon that practice developed into great hand-eye coordination, superior reaction time and an awareness and mind-body connection that leads to quicker and more efficient reactions. That's the ultimate goal, and today there are many various tools and resources that you can put to use besides the old stick and bottle cap routine.

Of course, this isn't the be all and end all of baseball hitting. To improve baseball hitting you can work on many different areas of your game, both physically and mentally. However, giving yourself a head start by learning how to act and react quicker and more efficiently will provide yourself with a better chance and opportunity for each and every pitch you see.
