It can be said that taking care of a pet animal is quite similar to taking care of a child. With a child, you try your best to be good parents but somehow your kid just cant stay out of trouble. With a dog, you just cant keep them out of clashes or worse, attacking people when youve done all you could sending them to obedience school, socialized him with other dogs, taught him good behaviors as well as a trick or two. Of course, to you, it is never yours that started the fight, yours just went along with the heat of the moment and before you know it, the situation gets out of control. When this happens, you cant help but ask yourself, what should you do?
In order to bring to a standstill a fight or to prevent an attack, you must remember never to yell at them to discontinue, as they might think of the yelling as an encouragement to start fighting even harder. How to stop a dog fight? Look around you, and if there is a water hose nearby, try to spray them down, dont panic and aim the water jet at their legs and feet as they are more responsive to stimuli on their extremities rather than other places. If all these still couldnt discontinue the fight or attack, try to pull them apart, but there is a high chance of getting bitten. Do not grab them by the collars or the scruffs of their necks in the middle of a fight or they might whip back and snap at you. It is best to have the other dogs owner to be present at times like these, so that each owner can grab their pets tail and lift up their hind legs off the ground as this act will surprise them by throwing them off their balance, making it easier to pull them apart. However, if you are at the scene by yourself, then try to take charge of the aggressor by grabbing his tail and lifting his hind legs and then pulling him away from the other pet.
Another option that you can go for is to get a TASER gun and use it when you need to on dogs. A bit extreme, and even a little sadistic, but this is definitely a method worth trying as the TASER blast causes very little pain to them, compared to the pain from injuries due to the vicious clashes. It is also worth noting that the use of a TASER gun has no permanent damage to the attacking pet.
The use of a TASER gun to discontinue clashes and stop dog attacks are not only quick, but also efficient. According to the information given by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (CDC), in North America, an estimated 368,245 persons were treated for bite related injuries for the year 2001, and the majority of the victims were children of 5 to 9 years old. A blast from the TASER gun will knock the aggressor to the ground as an electrical jolt is sent through their body, and with them being in a state of shock, there will be enough time to subdue him.
The US based Insurance Information Institute stated that for the year 2003, dog bites accounted for $321.6 million in claims. 13,498,254 was the number of dog deaths for the year 2005, as quoted from a report by the American Pet Association and $137.56 per incident was how much the average cost of medical treatment for pets that are involved in clashes, as reported by The North American Vet Society for the year 2002. Judging from the above statistics we can safely say that the use of TASER gun will certainly help to cut down the number of fatalities and injuries to humans and pets, as well as cutting down the cost of pet medical bills. On April 13th 2006, the use of a TASER gun for dog control by a Monroe police officer named Greg Witten, to subdue two attacking pit bulls on a golf course was published in The Times Herald-Record. Having escaped from their Still Road home, the dogs harassed the golfers at the Monroe Country Club, forcing the golfers to defend themselves using golf clubs. The act of zapping them twice with a TASER gun by Witten forced them to return home.
You can never imagine your pet being in a fight. However you will never know what could provoke them or another pet into fighting, or worse, attacking someone. Even if you certainly cant imagine having to TASER your pet, it is best to be prepared for such events, no matter how unlikely they might seem. As TASER guns are pretty inexpensive nowadays, it is a good idea to invest in one for your pets safety.
